Athens On A Layover

sunny 25 °C

Our flight this morning, while early, was fairly seamless. I tried to sleep but Josh wasn't able to so both of us are feeling really groggy! We still wanted to power through so we got metro tickets into the city and found our way to the Acropolis.

Getting off the metro we walked through a national garden to get to the Acropolis. There is history around every corner, these are just a few things we found on our 15 minute walk.

We broke away from the garden and we're in the cute streets of Plaka walking towards the Acropolis. We got our tickets and made our way to the top of the hill!

What a view. Athens and its white buildings were sprawling before us. I've seen this all before, but it was many years ago and many of the memories only live in this blog! Josh and I enjoyed the sights and kept trekking up the hill to the main attraction.

We were stopped so some military men could walk down the marble steps of the Acropolis, were not sure what that was all about but we waited patiently and then carried on.

The view only got better and Josh got to see the Parthenon! Totally worth the trek into the city.

We made our way through the tourists and down the other side of the historical site.

Josh was fading fast, and we found a cute souvenir shop that served red bull so that tided him over for a few minutes while we made our way to the Monastiraki area to have brunch and shop the flea market. Many of the cafes were only serving a small breakfast, but after looking at 10 menus we found one serving lunch and with awesome vegan options! It was only 10 am but we'd been up since midnight, so we indulged in a local beer and cider and I had an awesome veggie burger. I really enjoyed the people watching from the al fresco cafe, after being in a country where 99% of the women are dressed head to toe in the black garments and head scarfs to cover up. Everyone seemed impeccably dressed here!

We wandered a few blocks and found the flea market, I wished we had more euros to spare as there were a ton of cute clothes and jewelry I could have bought! I stuck to just a pin to add to my collection and with that we got back on the metro to get to the airport early. Josh and I are both hoping to get a bit of sleep in the airport before we travel again for a few hours.
